Coins that are metal detected deeper than 3" should not be probed.  It is not worth the risk of damaging a good coin.  Probes made of brass, steel, plastic, or carbon fiber can easily push soil particles across the face of a buried coin during probing.  Coins three inches or less can quickly be located with this probe and easily popped out of the ground (with the probe) without digging.  This probe is perfect for locating and popping clad coins out of the ground.
